Allan Mallinson: The Making of the British Army

The Making of the British Army

Description

Edgehill, 1642: Surveying the disastrous scene in the aftermath of the first battle of the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell realizes that war can no longer be made in the old, feudal way: there has to be system and discipline, and therefore - eventually - a standing professional army. From the 'New Model Army' of Cromwell's distant vision, former soldier Allan Mallinson shows us the people and events that have shaped the army we know today. How Marlborough's momentous victory at Blenheim is linked to Wellington's at Waterloo; how the desperate fight at Rorke's Drift in 1879 underpinned the heroism of the airborne forces at Arnhem in 1944; and, why Montgomery's momentous victory at El Alamein mattered long after the Second World War was over. From the Army's origins at the battle of Edgehill to our current conflict in Afghanistan, this is history at its most relevant - and most dramatic.

" Together, they sit in cafes, hatch grand plans, and share their artistic aspirations and disappointments. And they become friends. But as they grow ever closer, Mrs. Jones begins to realize just how powerful Insel s hold over her is. Erudite, witty, and iconoclastic, Taleb's message is revolutionary: The antifragile, and only the antifragile, will make it. One of the most popular creators of paper dolls in the 1930s, Queen Holden was a celebrated artist whose early books delighted children and adults alike and to this day The Making of the British Army download PDF remain eagerly sought by collectors. Mafiya enforcer Aleksandr "The Siberian" Sevastyan's loyalty to his boss is unwavering, until he meets the boss's long-lost daughter, a curvy, tantalizing redhead who haunts his mind and heats his blood like no other. Ordered to protect her, Aleksandr will do anything to possess her as well--on his own wicked terms.

Rebuilding Shattered Lives: Treating Complex PTSD and Dissociative Disorders

Description

Children, adolescents, and adults who experience "developmentally adverse interpersonal trauma are at risk not only for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also for other anxiety, affective, addictive, conduct, eating, psychotic personality disorders, as well as for retraumatization. Now in an updated Second Edition, this book describes the theoretical constructs of how complex trauma-related clinical syndromes evolve and present in adult patients, integrating theories concerning posttraumatic stress disorder, dissociation and personality development. This book is an authoritative clinical guide to the treatment of patients with complex posttraumatic and dissociative disorders.

The only thing most people know about Kazakhstan is that it is homeland to Borat - and he isn't even real. Actually this vast place - the last unknown inhabited country in the world - is far more surprising and entertaining. For one thing, it is as varied as Europe, combining stupendous wealth, grinding poverty, exotic traditions and a mad dash for modernity. Crisscrossing a vanished land, Christopher Robbins finds Eminem by a shrinking Aral Sea, goes eagle-hunting, visits the scene of Dostoyevsky's doomed first love, takes up residence beside one-time neighbour Leon Trotsky and visits some of the most beautiful, unspoilt places on earth. * Never-before-seen artwork! The days of boom and bubble are over, and the time has come to understand the long-term economic reality. Although the Great Recession officially ended in June 2009, hopes for a new phase of rapid economic expansion were quickly dashed. Instead, growth has been slow, unemployment has remained high, wages and benefits have seen little improvement, poverty has increased, and the trend toward more inequality of incomes and wealth has continued. It appears that the Great Recession has given way to a period of long-term anemic growth, which Foster and McChesney aptly term the Great Stagnation. This incisive and timely book traces the origins of economic stagnation and explains what it means for a clear understanding of our current situation. The authors point out that increasing monopolization of the economy when a handful of large firms dominate one or several industries leads to an over-abundance of capital and too few profitable investment opportunities, with economic Rebuilding Shattered Lives: Treating Complex PTSD and Dissociative Disorders pdf stagnation as the result. Absent powerful stimuli to investment, such as historic innovations like the automobile or major government spending, modern capitalist economies have become increasingly dependent on the financial sector to realize profits. And while financialization may have provided a temporary respite from stagnation, it is a solution that cannot last indefinitely, as instability in financial markets over the last half-decade has made clear. I Loved You Before You Were Born

Description

"Even before you were born, I was your grandma and I loved you." A loving grandmother eagerly awaits the arrival of her grandchild. She dreams of the baby's soft sighs, sweet smells, and tiny toes, and imagines the infant smiling, rolling over, and crawling for the first time. Finally, the baby arrives and Grandma is ready with a very special message.

Jeremy Keeling first met Amy, an orang-utan abandoned by his mother, when he was looking after the private menagerie of music impresario Gordon Mills. A friendship was forged that would become the defining relationship of both their lives. One day, when Jeremy was driving along with one-year-old Amy sitting beside him in the passenger seat, he fell asleep at the wheel and caused a horrific car crash. The first policeman on I Loved You Before You Were Born download PDF the scene crawled into the wreckage where he was staggered to see a hairy, non-human hand cradling Jeremy's head amid the glass and twisted metal: having been saved by Jeremy, Amy now refused to let him go. For Jeremy, it was to be a long convalescence, but he was able to repay his debt to Amy when he joined forces with Jim Cronin, a tough-talking primate-lover from the Bronx, who shared his vision of creating a sanctuary for abused and abandoned monkeys. Pooling their knowledge, passion and meagre resources, the two men took on a derelict pig farm in Dorset and, over the next twenty years, slowly transformed it into a 65-acre, cage-less sanctuary for beleaguered primates, rescued from poachers, photographers and scientists on daring raids.

Marieke Anschutz,Polly Lawson,Tony Langham,Plym Peters: Children and Their Temperaments

Children and Their Temperaments

Description

Drawing on an ancient tradition, Rudolf Steiner referred to four fundamental 'types' or 'temperaments' in the human personality, each of which, he said, has different personal needs and ways of relating socially. From her experience of working with children of all ages, Marieke Anschutz provides a guide to children's different temperaments and their role in child character, health and personality development. The book includes illustrations from home and school, in the context of the Steiner-Waldorf classroom. The author discusses how these ideas may be used to manage, and relate to, groups and individuals.

The murder of five women in late 2006 shocked the nation and kept many of us glued to our TV screens, horrified by the unfolding tragedy. For the quiet town of Ipswich it was fifty days of fear and soul searching, from the disappearance of the first victim to the dramatic arrest of the lead suspect, Steve Wright. Journalist Paul Harrison and Professor of Criminology David Wilson arrived in Ipswich Children and Their Temperaments download book just as the first body was discovered. Their on-the-scene access, and Professor Wilson's first-hand experience as a profiler, meant that they were first to put forward the explosive theory that a serial killer was at large. In Hunting Evil, Harrison and Wilson take the reader to the heart of the story. Both visited the sites where the killer disposed of his victims' bodies; both walked the red light area of Ipswich; and both talked to those closest to the victims. They explore the reasons why someone will kill and kill again, and perhaps most important of all explain how serial killers target the must vulnerable in our society, and what can be done to make our communities safer for everyone.

So What Do They Really Know?: Assessment That Informs Teaching and Learning

Description

In So What Do They Really Know? Cris Tovani explores the complex issue of monitoring, assessing, and grading students' thinking and performance with fairness and fidelity. Like all teachers, Cris struggles to balance her student-centered instruction with school system mandates. Her recommendations are realistic and practical; she understands that what isn't manageable isn't sustainable. Cris describes the systems and structure she uses in her own classroom and shows teachers how to use assessments to monitor student growth and provide targeted feedback that enables students to master content goals. She also shares ways to bring students into the assessment cycle so they can monitor their own learning, maximizing motivation and engagement. So What Do They Really Know? includes a wealth of information: Lessons from Cris's classroom Templates showing how teachers can use the workshop model to assess and differentiate instruction Student work, including samples from linguistically diverse learners, struggling readers, and college-bound seniors Anchor charts of student thinking Ideas on how to give feedback Guidelines that explain how conferring is different from monitoring Suggestions for assessing learning and differentiating instruction during conferences Advice for managing ongoing assessment Cris's willingness to share her own struggles continues to be a hallmark of her work. Teachers will recognise their own students and the challenges they face as they join Cris on the journey to figure out how to raise student achievement.

First published pseudonymously in 1764, The Castle of Otranto purported to be a translation of an Italian story of the time of the crusades. In it Walpole attempted, as he declared in the Preface to the second edition, 'to blend the two kinds of romance: the ancient and the modern'. He gives us a series of catastrophes, ghostly interventions, revelations of identity, and exciting contests. Crammed with invention, entertainment, terror, and pathos, the novel was an immediate success and Walpole's own favourite among his numerous works. His friend, the poet Thomas Gray, wrote that he and his family, having read Otranto, were now 'afraid to go to bed o'nights'. The novel is here reprinted from a text of 1798, the last that Walpole himself prepared for the press. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a So What Do They Really Know?: Assessment That Informs Teaching and Learning download ebook wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Buddha in Daily Life: Introduction to the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin

Description

Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism encourages the belief that, through its faith and practices, spiritual and material blessings and benefits can be available to everyone in this life. Needs can be met, and success achieved, not merely for oneself but for others (and the world) through dedication to the Lotus Sutra, a central teaching of Buddhism. It combines these personal objectives with the commitment to world peace, ecology and the easing of suffering, especially, AIDS. Attracting such well known followers as Jeff Banks, Sandie Shaw, Tina Turner and Roberto Baggio, Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism is rooted in a Buddhist tradition going back to the teachings of Nichiren in the 13th century, and is part of an international movement based in Japan.

Description

"Abandon the Old in Tokyo "continues to delve into the urban underbelly of 1960s Tokyo, exposing not only the seedy dealings of the Japanese everyman but Yoshihiro Tatsumi's maturation as a storyteller. Many of the stories deal with the economic hardships of the time and the strained relationships between men and women, but do so by means of dark allegorical twists and turns. A young sewer cleaner's girlfriend has a miscarriage and leaves him when he proves incapable of finding higher-paying work. When a factory worker loses his hand on the job, the parallels between him and his pet monkey prove startling and significant.

In print for fifty years, White Collar by C. Wright Mills is considered a standard on the subject of the new middle class in twentieth-century America. This landmark volume demonstrates how the conditions and styles of middle class life-originating from elements of both the newer lower and upper classes-represent modern society as a whole. By examining white-collar life, Mills aimed to learn something about what was becoming more typically "American" than the once-famous Western frontier character. He painted a picture instead of a society that had evolved into a business-based milieu, viewing America instead as a great salesroom, an enormous file, and a new universe of management. Russell Jacoby, author of The End of Utopia and The Last Intellectuals, contributes a new Afterword to this edition, in which he reflects on the impact White Collar had at its original publication and considers what it Ressourcement: A Movement for Renewal in Twentieth-century Catholic Theology download book means to our society today. "A book that persons of every level of the white collar pyramid should read and ponder. It will alert them to their condition for their better salvation."-Horace M. Ressourcement: A Movement for Renewal in Twentieth-century Catholic Theology

Description

Ressourcement: A Movement for Renewal in Twentieth-Century Catholic Theology provides both a historical and a theological analysis of the achievements of the renowned generation of theologians whose influence pervaded French theology and society in the period 1930 to 1960, and beyond. It considers how the principal exponents of ressourcement, leading Dominicans and Jesuits of the faculties of Le Saulchoir (Paris) and Lyon-Fourviere, inspired a renaissance in twentieth-century Catholic theology and initiated a movement for renewal that contributed to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The book assesses the origins and historical development of the biblical, liturgical, and patristic ressourcement in France, Germany, and Belgium, and offers fresh insights into the thought of the movement's leading scholars. It analyses the fierce controversies that erupted within the Jesuit and Dominican orders and between leading ressourcement theologians and the Vatican. The volume also co

Since that day at The Pagan Stone, town lawyer Fox has been able to see into others minds, a talent he shares with Layla. He must earn her trust, because their link will help fight the darkness that threatens to engulf the town. The Pagan Stone: Though Gage and Cybil share the gift of seeing the future, that s all they share. Good or bad has yet to be determined and could mean the difference between absolute destruction or an end to the nightmare for Hawkins Hollow."

Originally delivered in the form of lectures at Glasgow, Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations Books I-III laid the foundations of economic theory in general and Young Hank Zipzer 2: A Short Tale about a Long Dog free pdf 'classical' economics in particular, and this Penguin Classics edition is edited with an introduction and notes by Andrew Skinner. The publication of The Wealth of Nations in 1776 coincided with America's Declaration of Independence, and with this landmark treatise on political economy, Adam Smith paved the way for modern capitalism, arguing that a truly free market - fired by competition yet guided as if by an 'invisible hand' to ensure justice and equality - was the engine of a fair and productive society. Books I - III of The Wealth of Nations examine the 'division of labour' as the key to economic growth, by ensuring the interdependence of individuals within society. They also cover the origins of money and the importance of wages, profit, rent and stocks; but the real sophistication of his analysis derives from the fact that it encompasses a combination of ethics, philosophy and history to create a vast panorama of society.
